It’s what we gathered close to our hearts and comforted us so much that it stayed with us always. It’s us saying 𝘕𝘖 to whatever threatens to overwhelm and destroy the things we value as a family.
No matter how often we move with the military, our house is our 𝘏𝘖𝘔𝘌. Our learning is the part of our life, binding us together as we share stories, and lift our eyes towards truth.

Hubby pulled out the turkey fryer while the boys played in the backyard, and treated us to a fun, old fashioned, crab boil. So I wrapped the table in paper and paired it with crusty sourdough bread, sweet tea, and a cake from the glorious bakery at Costco.
A sunny, 50 degree Washington day is summer in my book. But still a bit too chilly to eat outside, even with tons of garlic buttery fingers 😂

Wrapping up the end of the year our last grade photo. These boys are finishing up their levels at their own pace, on their own time. They’re finishing with joy. They’re finishing with hearts full of stories and memories. This pandemic may have taken our youth sports, friends’ birthday parties, co-ops, and field trips, but it didn’t take His love or our joy.
As I enter my 13th year homeschooling📚, If I could go back to the beginning, I’d tell myself, Before you worry about language arts curriculums, or math programs, or anything else, focus on the relationships and consider their hearts first. I’m grateful to the Holy Spirit for whispering the importance of their hearts, early on.
I go into each new year asking myself if I am really seeing each child - individually. I think about their dreams, their hearts, their struggles, and their character. I think about the things they cannot fully articulate yet and I try to find ways to build in conversations and stories to help give them a voice.
I am always asked what is my favorite thing about homeschooling. It is, by far, the relationships we have formed over the years. Yes, relationships are challenging! It’s not always rainbows and sunshine around here, but we are together in needing and giving grace, and that’s what matters most. I’m not schooling them, we are learning together.

The boys and I are always ‘chasing the spark’. After homeschooling for over 12 years, I’ve found what works and what doesn’t, and childhood directed learning is still our favorite way to study and learn. If they dig up knowledge on their own, in the very wise words of the lovely Charlotte Mason:

The boys picked up the detailed steps and dived right into their lessons. Later, they had no trouble explaining what happened each step of the way -thanks to the clear concise, visual instructions.
